Be kind to me, God—
I’m in deep, deep trouble again.
I’ve cried my eyes out;
I feel hollow inside. Psalm 31:9 (The Message)
As a pastor and chaplain, I see the cycle play out over and over again. When we are doing “good,” when we’re in a “good place,” when our circumstances and behavior meet our standard of what we think they should be, that’s when we get on the God train. We pray, we show up at church, we engage in God talk.
However, there is a stream in scripture, especially the Psalms, which reveals an understanding of God as one who can bear our pain, our shame, our grief, our shortcomings, our lack.
I don’t need God I have to preform for or impress. I need a God to who I can cry out. And I have one!
