Daily Lectionary Reading: Psalm 98 (NRSV, The Message); Isaiah 49:5-6 (NRSV, The Message); Acts 10:1-34 (NRSV, The Message)

The Lord says, “But that’s not a big enough job for my servant—
just to recover the tribes of Jacob,
merely to round up the strays of Israel.
I’m setting you up as a light for the nations
so that my salvation becomes global!”

Isaiah 59:6 (The Message)

Or, as the NRSV translates it, "It is too light a thing..." It is easy to settle for the small, for the status quo in our lives, in our work, in our ministry. Of course, we go through waves of engagement, periods of expansion and periods of withdrawal depending on our circumstances. However, there is a tendency to hunker down in the smallness, to defend the parochial and the status quo. The Divine expands - NOT a conquering, marching forward as it has so tragically been misunderstood, but an ever-increasing openness that moves outward from the center that is God. There is always more to learn and experience!
