Read Ephesians 4:25-32 (NRSV, The Message)
Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up,b as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear.
Ephesians 4:29 (NRSV)
The church is called to be both sanctuary and protest (Rev. Traci Blackmon)—a place of nurture and a voice for justice. This dual calling shapes how we speak to one another and to our world. Within our faith community, we create space where honest words can be shared without fear of rejection. In the wider world, we speak truth to power with prophetic clarity. Both aspects of this calling require intentional speech. We must learn to set aside harmful communication patterns like complaining without purpose, criticizing without love, and gossiping without accountability. Instead, we practice gratitude that acknowledges goodness even in difficult times. We offer encouragement that strengthens others for their journey. We speak solidarity with those who suffer, ensuring they know they're not alone. This transformation of our speech doesn't happen through willpower alone. It requires community—people who will both challenge and support us as we develop new habits of communication. It requires prayer—regular connection with the God whose Word created all things. And it requires practice—daily choices to speak life rather than death. As we grow together in this discipline, our words become instruments of God's healing work in a wounded world.
Reflection Question
How might our church community become more intentional about creating spaces where both honest truth-telling and nurturing encouragement can flourish?
Prayer
God of all communication, transform our community into a place where words bring healing rather than harm. Help us speak truth with love, offer encouragement with sincerity, and stand in solidarity with those who suffer. May our collective voice reflect your heart for justice and compassion. Amen.
