'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.'
- John 1:1
- John 1:1
Seeing Beyond the Surface
Do you remember getting glasses for the first, or had cataracts removed? Do you remember the chnge in how things looked? Everything appears clearer, more defined, and more vivid than before; it's as though you have rediscovered an entire world that you could never remember being so clear.
This is a physical reflection of a profound spiritual reality regarding seeing God. While seeing God may conjure up images of a spectacular vision, or supernatural appearance of a deity, this is not, necessarily, what true spiritual sight is. True spiritual sight is actually recognizing the divine presence that is present within everyday life – in the pattern of leaves, in the kindness of strangers, in the strength of the human spirit – through eyes that are developed enough to see such things. Seeing God in this manner requires that we shift our point of view. God is not limited to what can be seen with our physical eyes.
Divine presence surrounds us always, awaiting recognition from those who are willing to open their hearts and live authentically. The promise is not that we will someday behold some far-off deity, but rather that we will come to understand that there is holiness present everywhere we look. When we begin looking at things differently, they begin to appear differently. Spiritual vision has the power to turn the ordinary into something extraordinary, miraculous, and transform our perception of our daily lives, so that we will realize we have been living upon holy ground all along.
Reflection Question
What ordinary moments in your day might be invitations to see God's presence more clearly?
Prayer
God, open my eyes to see You in the everyday moments of my life. Help me recognize Your presence in both the beautiful and the broken places around me.
