"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 5:10
Blessed In the Margins
It seems backwards, doesn't it? Jesus looks at people who are suffering, people who have been pushed aside, stripped of dignity, and dismissed by those in power, and He calls them blessed. Not "hang in there" or "it will get better someday." Blessed. Right now. In this. Jesus spoke these words to real people living under a real empire. They weren't abstractions. They were laborers whose work was taken from them, families whose dignity was ignored, communities whose voices didn't count. And Jesus looked them in the eye. That matters. Because it means this blessing isn't a consolation prize. It's a declaration. God sees those on the margins. God is with them. And in that presence, there is something that the world cannot give and cannot take away. You may know someone living in that kind of vulnerability right now. Maybe you've experienced it yourself. The good news is that Jesus doesn't look away from that pain. He walks straight toward it and speaks life into it. Encouragement for today: You are not invisible to God. Neither is anyone you love who is struggling. The same Jesus who blessed the marginalized sees you, knows you, and calls you blessed.
Reflection Question
Who in your life or community is being pushed to the margins right now, and how might God be calling you to see them the way Jesus does?
Prayer
Lord, open our eyes to see those whom the world overlooks. Help us to trust that Your blessing reaches into every hard and painful place. Amen.
