'In the last days the mountain of the Lord's temple will be established as the highest of the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and peoples will stream to it.' - Micah 4:1
Finding Peace In a Divided World
Division dominates every conversation today. Political debate is now a battle ground, and it appears to many that we have abandoned hope for actual peace.
Science tells us that humans are genetically designed to identify divisions and view them as threats. Humans tend to congregate around people who look and act like themselves, while being suspicious of other groups. That is not a moral failing; it is part of human design.
However, Jesus shows us how to achieve a better peace than what this world will provide. Rome maintained its peace by means of force and fear (pax romana). Jesus teaches us shalom—peace which involves everybody, not just the ones who agree with you. Shalom does not mean avoidance of disagreement or denial of difference. True peace is available to all peoples, not just yours.
Becoming peacemakers begins when we recognize that our nature is to divide but our desires to transform division through God's grace.
Reflection Question
What symbols, appearances, or differences in others trigger your immediate judgment or discomfort?
Prayer
God, help me recognize when my natural instincts toward division are at work. Give me eyes to see others as you see them, and a heart that seeks your peace for all people.
