"But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity." Luke 10:33
Seeing the Whole Person
It happens almost without thinking. A bumper sticker on the car ahead. A post that makes our blood rise. A license plate that tells us, we think, everything we need to know. In an instant, we reduce a person to a label. Opponent. Idiot. Other.
But people are never just one thing. Every person carries a story: a family, a history, griefs and hopes that shaped who they are. Othering is what happens when we fix on one difference and let it erase everything we share. And once we stop seeing someone whole, it becomes much easier to stop caring about them at all.
Jesus never reduced people to labels. He ate with tax collectors and Pharisees, fishermen and foreigners. He knew his friends' failures before they did, and he stayed at the table anyway.
This week, notice the moments when you feel the pull to shrink someone down to a single trait. You don't have to agree with them. You only have to remember that they are more than that one thing. That small act of remembering is where neighboring begins.
Reflection Question
Who have you been seeing as a label rather than a whole person? What might change if you looked a little longer?
Prayer
Holy One, open my eyes to see people as you see them: whole, complicated, beloved. When I am tempted to shrink someone down to a single difference, widen my vision and soften my heart. Amen.
