"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 5:10
The Reward Is Now
When we hear the word "reward," we tend to think of something waiting at the finish line. A prize at the end of a long race. And there is something to that. But if we only look ahead, we miss what is already here. Jesus promised a reward to those who are persecuted for righteousness. But that reward is not only a future hope. Much of it is available right now, in the middle of the struggle.
Warren Carter in Matthew and the Margins describes the reward as communion. Communion with God. Communion with one another. The deep, sustaining connection that forms when people work together toward something that matters. That kind of community is not a consolation. It is the thing itself. Think about a time when you worked alongside others for something good and hard. There is a particular kind of joy in that. A sense of being fully alive. That is not accidental. That is the kingdom of God breaking through into the present moment.
Encouragement for today: The work of justice and love is not just preparation for something better. It is already something better. The reward is woven into the journey itself.
Reflection Question
When have you experienced a deep sense of joy or meaning in the middle of difficult, purposeful work alongside others?
Prayer
God, help us to recognize Your presence not just at the destination but in the journey. Open our eyes to the reward that is already here. Amen.
