Read Amos 5:21-24 (NRSV, The Message)
I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me... But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! - Amos 5:21,24
In our spiritual journey, it's easy to become comfortable within the walls of our church, focusing solely on worship services and religious ceremonies. However, God calls us to a deeper, more challenging expression of faith. Just as the prophet Amos spoke to the Israelites, God desires more from us than mere religious observances. He seeks hearts that pursue justice and righteousness in our communities. This means stepping beyond our comfort zones and engaging with the real issues affecting people around us. When we truly understand this calling, our faith becomes more than just Sunday morning gatherings – it transforms into a force for positive change in our world.
How might your faith look different if you focused as much on pursuing justice in your community as you do on traditional religious practices?
Prayer
God, open our eyes to see beyond our comfortable religious routines. Give us hearts that beat for justice and hands ready to serve. Help us understand what it truly means to worship you through our actions. Amen.
