"Do not judge, or you too will be judged." — Matthew 7:1
It is one of the most quoted lines Jesus ever said, and also one of the most misunderstood. "Do not judge." We hear it and assume He meant we should never form an opinion, never speak up, never call something wrong. But that is not quite what He was saying. Jesus was not asking us to turn off our discernment. There are real moments that call us to speak out against injustice.
What He was warning against is something more pointed: the habit of writing people off entirely. Of deciding someone is beyond grace. Of making a final verdict on another human being. That kind of judgment is not ours to make. And if we are honest, most of us know exactly what it feels like to slip into it. A frustrating coworker. A family member who keeps making the same mistake. A stranger whose choices baffle us. The pull to condemn is real, and it shows up fast. Here is the encouraging part. Noticing that pull is not a failure. It is actually a starting point. Awareness is where change begins. You are not a bad person for feeling the urge to judge. You are a human being who is being invited into something deeper. This week, pay attention to the moments when judgment rises up in you. Do not shame yourself for it. Just notice it. That noticing is the first step toward something better.
Reflection Question
When you feel the urge to judge someone, do you tend to act on it, suppress it, or get curious about it?
Prayer
God, help me to notice the moments when I am quick to condemn others. Give me the grace to pause and remember that final judgment belongs to You alone. Amen.
