"The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions." — Exodus 16:4
There is Enough
Do you find yourself lying awake at night going over the numbers thinking about whether or not what you have will be enough? I think most of us have. That feeling is very real, normal, and human.
Here is a story to sit with. In Exodus, one of the defining myths of the the people of Israel, God fed the wanderers with manna. They weren't provided a large stock pile of food. They received just enough for each day. Each morning, there would be enough manna for that day. No one would go hungry and no one had too much. Those ancient story-tellers imagined this as sacred economy. This exact pattern continues throughout the scripture. In fact, the overall plan of God is a system based on enough for everyone. It's a system that is designed to eliminate both an environment of scarcity, where people are scrambling and hoarding; and a system of excess, where some people acquire more than enough wealth (and perhaps even power), while many other people go without.
Instead, God wants to create an atmosphere where everyone receives enough. This isn't foolishness. Trusting that there is enough, and that God's provision will move from our hands into the hands of those around us – is nothing short of a bold statement of faith. As we begin to understand that, things start to shift. We become less tight. Our anxiety becomes less intense. We don’t have to have absolutely everything figured out right now. Let’s take one small step forward together. We might start with noticing where fear of not having enough is shaping your decisions. That awareness is the first step toward something better.
For Reflection
Where in your life right now is fear of scarcity quietly driving your decisions more than trust in God's provision?
Prayer
God, thank you that your provision has always been enough. Loosen the grip that fear has on my heart, and help me to trust you one day at a time. Amen.
