Daily Lectionary Reading: Psalm 95 (NRSV, The Message); 1 Chronicles 11:1-9 (NRSV, The Message); Revelation 7:13-17 (NRSV, The Message)

And David became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts was with him.... 1 Chronicles 11:9 (NRSV)

The scripture passages today, echoing the theme of good shepherd Sunday, touch on the theme of leader as shepherd - in David and in Jesus. The passaage from Chronicles relates David's annointing as king of Israel. The passage from Revelation speaks of Jesus, both shepherd and lamb, on the the throne.

I am pondering those images of shepherd - David, fortified in his city becoming greater and greater and Christ on the throne, beyond the trials and tribulations of earthly life. That's not what an actual shepherd is. They are in the midst of the sheep, stepping oin the same mud as those they are charged with. Yes, it is often feels secure to have a shepherd beyond us leading the way, but I also want a shepherd who is in the field with me, leading while present.
